This is an original acrylic painting on wood panel. I used my own fingerprint and changed it to the shape in the middle of the work. The background pattern is inspired by Persian Kilim (which is a flat tapestry woven carpet or rug). But the idea and inspiration behind the painting is Iran and people’s understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. In Iran these words barely differentiated or even understood, which is not that surprising knowing about LGBTIQ rights in Iran. What actually I find more irritating is that fact that legality of sex change surgery has been used as an alternative way to force non-heteronormative genders to fit into categories of male and female in order to prevent acts that fall outside gender binaries. The painting is already attached to a floating frame assembled and painted by myself.

Germany
Imanuel Scheiko is an Iranian visual artist. The current phase of his artistic journey began when he moved to Germany in 2009 and dove deeper into exploring the intersections of culture. Scheiko blends the ancient visuals of Persian carpet weaving with the complexities of life in Berlin. He draws direct inspiration from his experience as a wedding photographer and translator for refugees. The sobering chaos of iconic Persian patterns invites the viewer on a quest of perceptive discovery. Scheiko's work plays with elements of paradox; seemingly symmetrical and harmonious but ultimately human in its essence. The artist remains deliberately expressive in form and color, and at the same time engages with story and narrative. He uses these components to extend his culturally open approach to the viewer.
