The Roof of the World is what the Pamir Mountains are called. The Pamir Mountains are shared by Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan and Afghanistan. And everywhere they appear to travelers different, but always exciting. Located on the territory of Tajik Badakhshan, in the very heart of Asia, the Pamirs are a territory of snow-capped majestic mountains, incredible color of reservoirs, valleys with wild rivers and lifeless mountain deserts. The Pamirs act as a gigantic and complex mountain chain located almost in the center of the Asian continent. Its mountains and plateaus form a tectonic hub that extends across Asia through Afghanistan, the Hindu Kush, the Tien Shan range in Kyrgyzstan, Kunlun in China, and into the Himalayas themselves. Ranked second only to the Himalayas in Tibet, the Pamirs are the highest mountains in the world with human habitation. The area is isolated and landlocked. The Pamir highlands form a variety of landscapes, from subtropical to alpine. The harsh and often impassable region has preserved the unique cultural identity of each of the regions separated by mountains and gorges. There are many glaciers in the Pamir Mountains, including the 77 km long Fedchenko Glacier: the longest outside the polar regions. Historically, the Pamir Mountains were considered a strategic trade route between Kashgar and Kokand on the Silk Road and were subject to numerous territorial conquests. The Silk Road, some 2,600 km long, connected the ancient Chinese capital of Xi'an through the Pamir Mountains in the west to Kashgar. In the 20th century, they became the site of the civil war in Tajikistan, border disputes between China and the Soviet Union, and the establishment of military bases by the United States, Russia and India. The Pamirs are a complex mountainous region that extends about 500 km from east to west and about 300 km from north to south.
