Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil on pigment prints on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. The artwork consists of fragments reconstructed from extracts and enlarged sections of an overpainted museum shop merchandize (a portrait as a notebook cover). The obsession of sampling, recycling, appropriating, and remixing existing material which have been overpainted is like a common thread through Peter Vahlefeld’s entire production process. The artwork reflects the merging of gesture and representation, where the fluidity of one balances the structure of the other and their multi-layered surface is shining through the chromatic superimposition of oil, acrylic paint, gold pigments, fabrics, and pigment prints. By sanding, tearing, and scraping through the bright layers, Vahlefeld reveals the hidden textures and complexities concealed beneath the surface. The painting might be an unresolved conflict between finished and unfinished, messed-up and un-messed-up or between content and abstraction.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions, art fairs, and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), and Sotheby's (Vienna). His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. Peter Vahlefeld was featured on the German television channel ZDF. He currently lives in Berlin.
