Photographed in a ward of an abandoned asylum in the UK. This asylum housed over 2000 patients in it's heyday. It has now been reconverted for housing use. The hospital was the last great London mental health hospital, and the last of the cluster. This was a group of five institutions on a huge estate. The hospital was built in the compact arrow design with external villas. Gina visited this complex over 25 times, sleeping in the buildings, running from security, visiting during the day and the night. It had sprawling corridors, male and female wards, a dentist surgery, a huge hall, storage, boiler rooms, a water tower, patient records and artwork and a vast network of tunnels. This artwork is from a ward which had many items and objects left behind but Gina was fascinated with the peeling paint in this room, as well as the tiny details such as the bow in the doorway. Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta 325gsm Giclee print, a premium quality paper, which is perfect for Gina Soden's brightly coloured and textured images. Fine Art Baryta paper has a similar foundation to that used in the past in traditional silver fibre prints. The paper's unique glossy Baryta surface lends itself perfectly to saturated colour images. Edition of 10 with 2 A/P's. Your print is produced by one of London's best printers. Gina Soden will then personally proof and check the artwork. It will then be packaged and rolled in a tube sent by courier. Size includes 2cm border so it is ready for framing. With your artwork there will be a signed & numbered certificate of authenticity. This can be affixed to the back of the print when framed.

At the heart of my photography is a preoccupation with abandoned structures and locations. Traveling widely to undisclosed sites throughout Europe, I explore the boundaries of beauty, decay, nostalgia and neglect. The genesis of each of my pieces is often the unique architectural character of each location, heightened by their painfully slow transformation after years of abandonment. Kate Bryan; 2012 "Rather than taking a documentary approach, Soden breathes a sense of life into the scenes, hinting at narrative with studied compositions. Characteristically each image has a distinctly painterly aesthetic, side stepping the tendency that photography has for observational and distanced looking. Soden’s approach is lyrical and directs the viewer to explore the concepts of time and memory. The compositions feature derelict asylums, long since closed schools, ex-military compounds and famous city power stations in various stages of decay. The results are striking and poignant, at once both edgy in their contemporary aesthetic and nostalgic in their ruinous beauty. The work is underscored by the potential controversy of gaining unlicensed access to the out of bounds areas. Every image is a product of a journey, referring both to the physical demands of gaining entry and to the passing of time which is evident in the abandoned locations. Like the Romantic poets before her, Soden offers room to reflect on more romantic notions of beauty and a sense of calmness despite collapse and structural devastation"
