This Artwork is called Saj after a cooking grill used in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon. It's a cooking implement made of metal and shaped like a dome, with a heat source underneath it. A saj is used for cooking different types of breads. In my 'Saj', the Encaustic is painted, where the bread would be cooking. It can be hung on a wall (as shown) and there is a plate hanger on the back. Made from thin, convex, glazed Porcelain, it has vine leaves impressed in to its surface. The coloured area is Encaustic (i.e. made with layers of hot wax) on a patch of unglazed ceramic. Encaustic and unglazed ceramic are perfect partners and the wax adheres beautifully. Seeds, vines etc. offer a promise of hope, of renewal, of something shared between all people. This organic source material is very connected to the land and therefore to the identities of all those involved. I express visually the connection of all people to the land in a visceral way. This work could be described as a form of figurative abstraction. This relief painting/sculpture is thin, fragile and transparent - like the seeds of hope.
