"Sprig" is from a series titled, "Hand Pieces." The series began as a meditation on the scroll form, which is found on most musical stringed instruments. The scroll in "Sprig" references the fiddlehead fern, with green and light purple dye, two colors often found together on plant stems. The arc form at the other end seems to reference a wrench or some other undefined tool. The pair is placed upon a double shelf, as thought they are being held out toward the viewer. Traditionally, wood patterns were used to produce molds for casting a metal object and were at times, discarded. In this case, however, the wood pattern has been "dressed up", dyed and varnished. In many cases, a gold powder has been added to the varnish, making them shimmer. The color schemes on the wood pieces vary. Conversely, all the bronzes have been painted with a grey metallic lacquer. Much of my practice includes collecting and preparing wood from local trees. When I began this process years ago, the material came from friends or neighbors who cut down trees and offered the wood to me. Now I have many trees on my property that may drop large branches. Most require careful and regular pruning. Recently I was forced to take down a sugar maple that was rotting from the inside out. This provided me with a considerable amount material that is dense and quite excellent. It also provided much of the material used to make “Red Fence.” The scroll form in the piece was made with wood I saved from pruning pear trees some years ago. I’d like to think that my work functions like poetry, except it uses forms instead of words to evoke thoughts and feelings that lie deep and barely realized.
