The paintings were inspired by a visit to a coal mine and by collaborating with the composer Gavin Higgins and Tradeager Town Band, a Championship Brass Band from Wales. The dance piece Dark Arteries commenorates the UK Miners Strike of 1984-1985. These costume designs were never realised but you can see a promotional clip of the work on my website www.markbaldwinstudios.co.uk Dark Ateries which was originally made for Rambert. Another idea for these costume designs was to collaborate with the artist Katie Paterson on her art work Earth-Moon-Earth as the designs are for dancers dressed as coal. Carbon is the basic building blocks of all matter.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS. The give lectures and demonstration on the nature of creativity, perception and Mental Time Travel.
