Sequana (La Seine) - Original Oil painting by Paul Armesto painted in New York City (2019-2023). Sequana was the name given to the deity of the Seine river in Gaul, modern day France. The river runs through four regions of France : Burgundy, Grand-Est, Île-de-France (Paris) and Normandy. Each region is represented in the painting by a church from those regions. Respectively : St.Vorles, Troyes Cathedral, Notre-Dame of Paris and Rouen Cathedral. Sequana is depicted in the Classical tradition holding a vessel from which the river springs out. A ladybug (Our Lady’s bug) is asking Sequana to help save Notre-Dame Cathedral from the fire it is undergoing. This is in reference to the 2019 fire Notre-Dame suffered from. As it happened, water from the Seine river was used to put out the fire. Inspired by Renaissance works, this painting aims at combining both the Ancient and the Modern poetic and mystical aspects of the Seine river.
