This piece is inspired by a beautiful cactus I came upon one day in Los Angeles. There were these large blooms all around its stalks, causing bees to flock to it, so it was a little thriving bit of life on a urban city street. I hung out, and marveled at the happenstance moment that it was and took some pics and kept going on my walk. What I learned later was that the cactus, now understood to be a Brazilian variety called Cereus Jamacaru or Mandacaru, only blooms for one day, most often at night, and that the blooms then fade and shrivel. So what luck that I came across this scene at the right time and right moment. Recently I started printing large woodcut prints on huge sheets of paper, which I started using as a base material in collage work. When I came upon these photos of this cactus in bloom, I started drawing and came up with these simple compositions. When translated to woodcut texture, it really came together and I’m excited to put this print up for sale here on Saatchi. The print is mounted to wood panel, so it hangs like a painting, but has all the textural beauty of a print. So far there are three works in this series in hues of green and blue so far. I can’t get over how gorgeous the texture is and I’ll be making more to continue to explore this gorgeous cactus.
