The subject of this drawing has been ripped and shattered each autumn for countless years. Twigs and branches repeatedly destroyed, only to heal and regrow. This year, it suffered such severity that damage has rendered almost its entire length, creating deep gouges and sinewy shreds that will struggle to heal before next year’s onslaught. Though there are inevitable creative decisions when creating an impression of the subject, it is vital that I work from genuine, found subject. Though my local hedgerows have on recently been clipped, leading to endless potential subjects, it was the particular blend of aged healing, new damage, and the arrangement of shredded wood that drew me to this particular subject. I plan to return next year to see how - or whether - it has survived this shattering. This work received the President's Award at the Society for Graphic Fine Art's DRAW 16 exhibition, London, October 2016.

I try to make the unnoticed notice-worthy. Inspiration comes from fleeting moments, glimpses of objects hidden in plain sight: an experience, a randomly generated narrative, a shattered piece of wood, the angle of a building, the shape of a wave. The world bombards my senses with more inspiration than I can ever hope to express. Returning to my art after two decades, I have learned the strength of variety and versatility, whilst retaining craft. How something is created – its process and its craft – is as vital to the finished piece as its motivation and subject. Drawing remains my primary focus. Its apparent limitations offer a purity and intimacy that brings artist and viewer closer in a way a painting rarely can. My abstract paintings are an extension of my drawing, incorporating many of the base techniques of mark-making, form, and tone, but with a more expressive and open focus. Continuing themes include solitude, isolation, and exclusion, particularly within - or reflecting the escape from - restless, bustling, cacophonous environments.
